Recap of the Gloucester 400
Northeastern faced off against BC to celebrate 400 years of Gloucester, MA
In a special celebration of Gloucester, MA's 400 years, Northeastern faced off against 14th-ranked Boston College in the "Gloucester 400" event, delivering an exciting game.
Northeastern was without two top defenders, Captain Megan Carter and Lily Yovetich, both missing from the lineup due to injury. So defenders like Jules Constantinople, Kristina Allard, and Abbey Marohn would need to step up their game because of the two absent defenders.
The special game started with a ceremonial puck drop, and then the Huskies would come out flying. 2:44 into the 2nd, Allie Lalonde found Peyton Anderson, who scored. Anderson capitalized on a slight breakaway, and despite a Boston College defender sliding into the net, the puck found the back of the net, giving Northeastern an early 1-0 lead. There was only one power play opportunity for the Huskies in the 1st, as a boarding call was assessed to Annaka Mettler 9:44 into the period. The Huskies had quite a few opportunities on the advantage, including 4 shots on goal. However, Grace Campbell stopped them all.
In the second period, we had a penalty shot 7:42 in. Sammy Taber had an opportunity to tie the game. However, Gwyneth Philips shut the door. Then, there was a flurry of penalties, including a 5 on 3 for the Eagles, which they successfully converted on. 11:02 in, Sidney Fess took a shot in the slot that got passed Gwyneth Philips. That negated the 5 on 3, but no goals were scored by BC on the short 5 on 4. The Eagles controlled most of the chances towards the end of the 2nd period but did not convert.
As we hit the third, the biggest event happened 6:54 into the period. Skylar Irving won a faceoff, the Huskies controlled, and then Taze Thompson scored on a snipe from the top of the slot to give the Huskies the lead 2-1. Katy Knoll made a great play to find Thompson, which resulted in the goal. Secondary assist to Kristina Allard. After the Thompson goal, it was a lot of back and forth. Chances were strong each way. Philips and Campbell both made some nice saves. But since it was 2-1, the Eagles had to pull the goalie with 1:31 to go, but under a minute later Skylar Irving made a nice play to end up sealing this one as she took a shot from the neutral zone that ended up hitting the empty net, which would seal this one. 3-1 Northeastern would be the final from the Gloucester 400.
Some notes from the game include:
Jules Constantinople was a force out there. She had 6 shots on goal and a blocked shot. She clearly exceeded expectations to contribute to the Huskies in this game.
Katy Knoll had 2 assists and was a +3. She played really hard and well.
Gwyneth Philips wore the “C” in the game, as Megan Carter usually wears it. I found it cool that a goalie wore it for the game. Philips also had an assist on Skylar Irving’s empty net goal.
I didn’t notice it, but there was a “Throwing Equipment” penalty on BC’s Jade Arnone at the same time as Skylar Irving’s empty net goal. Northeastern had a power play for the rest of the game.
Peyton Anderson also had 6 shots on goal, she was everywhere.
The arena was packed, as seen in the video I made below. Someone estimated there were around 700 people who attended. I’m not 100% sure if that number is true, but it the rink was packed nonetheless. Ticket sales were stopped the night before.
The only complaint I had about the arena was the temperature. It was freezing, but the players must’ve not cared as the ice looked really strong skating-wise.
